Primero: Formula 1 Superstar Fernando Alonso Holds Championship Lead, Grabs Second at British Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso may have had to settle for second at Silverstone. But make no mistake; the top spot in Formula 1’s Championship Standings still belongs to Ferrari.

Oakley’s Spanish speed demon finished a solid race at the British Grand Prix weekend – securing the runner-up spot behind Mark Webber, who edged the superstar with seven laps left.

“We were controlling the race more or less OK until the last stint, we were not quick enough and when Mark arrived I think he overtook very easy and there was nothing we can do,’’ Fernando said, rocking his Oakley Jupiter Squared eyewear after his second victory on the season – and his fourth podium finish in the last five races. "When you lead for almost an entire race, but are overtaken just a few laps from the finish, it does leave something of a bitter taste in the mouth.”

Coming out of the gates with a perfect start from pole to lead, Fernando made a breathtaking charge at Lewis Hamilton on Lap 19 – going to head-to-head for an exhilarating on track battle. Passing the Englishman in brilliant fashion, he clocked the fastest lap later in the race on Lap 25, further extending a lead he’d taken over Webber.

With a 5.4 second cushion out in front, Fernando’s key moments came at Lap 36 during his second stop. Switching to the option (softer) tires for his final run to the end of the race, his 3.9 second lead over Webber would not last, as Webber would power past with his Prime Pirelli tires for the win.

Nevertheless, Fernando’s solid second place finish ensured that his lead in the Championship standings remained at 13 points ahead.

“As far as I’m leading the championship, I’m more happy than worried,” Fernando continued. “If Mark was leading I would be worried about losing another seven points.”
“I’m very proud of the Ferrari recovery in the last few weeks. We have fought for victory in the last three or four races, and although there is still a lot to do, as we have said several times, we are on the right road.”
