San Remo: Simon Gerrans and Fabian Cancellara Dominate Spring Classics Cycling Opener in Italy

The picturesque Italian countryside is where the Big Classic Cycling Season kicks into gear. And if this year’s start at San Remo is any sign of things to come, Team Oakley is poised for year another epic season.

Cycling stars Simon Gerrans and Fabian Cancellara were the tip of the charge, taking the first and second position at Milano San Remo this past weekend in the first-ever road race to see the brand new Oakley Radar Lock performance eyewear piece in action.

“I still haven’t realized what we actually did today,” Simon said, rocking his own Oakley performance eyewear. "This is an amazing feeling to win this. The team rode perfectly, and we played our cards right.”

Taking the victory with a late surge on the Poggio into Milano-San Remo, Simon was trailed only by Fabian, who was in top form all day long.

“In general I think everything went the way it should go,” Fabian said, sporting his Oakley Radar Lock eyewear. “It was a hard race and a fast one too. At the end I was right there and when the attack came I was ready. Gerrans did some pulls and I understood that Nibali had his teammate Peter Sagan behind for the sprint so he didn’t have to work. I saw the riders coming at the end but after 300k it’s not easy to calculate exactly what to do and be right each time. In the end I got a nice second place and second in San Remo is prestigious of course, but it wasn’t the birthday present I was looking for.”

On his 33rd birthday, Fabian couldn’t quite hold up the lead with just under 10k left in the race – as the start of the Poggio saw Simon launch his late charge. Nonetheless, a solid result and an overall big day for the Big O rung in the Spring season in signature style.
